The much anticipated Mitcham Carnival will once again return this year to kick off summer on Saturday 13 June, 12 noon at Three Kings Piece.
To commemorate Merton’s 50th anniversary as a London borough, this year’s theme is ‘Back to the Swinging Sixties’.
Britain’s Got Talent 2014 finalist James Smith will be performing his new single as well as interpretations of soul classics on the main stage. Future Pro Wrestling will be returning this year after a gripping performance at the last carnival. The longest running lumberjack display team in Britain, Adams Axemen, will also be entertaining the crowd with the skills they have shown off in lumberjack competitions around the world. There will also be a family fair with over 120 Charity and Trade stalls.
Sports Blast, an initiative that looks to promote healthy living for young people in the borough by providing sports opportunities, will be offering children the chance to play football, netball, BMX and other sports throughout the day. The sports skills learnt can then be put into practice in a Little League Tournament. Residents who are passionate about baking are invited to ‘Get baking for Merton’ and showcase their talents to help celebrate Merton’s 50th Anniversary.
Mayor of Merton, Councillor David Chung said: “I look forward to celebrating Merton’s 50th Anniversary with the local community at the carnival this year. Mitcham Carnival is always packed full of activities for people of all ages to take part in and have fun. It is a fantastic way to start the summer.”
Cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Nick Draper said: “Mitcham Carnival will be a fantastic event this year, with everybody getting together to celebrate Merton’s 50th anniversary. I am excited with the line-up of events that are planned and there is something to suite everybody’s interests.
