Merton Council welcomed 30 pupils from Morden Primary School who took part in Merton Junior Neighbourhood Warden Watch. The scheme is a joint initiative between Merton Neighbourhood Watch and Circle Housing Wardens.
The pupils took part in five interactive sessions on crime prevention, environmental crime, anti-social behaviour, property marking, finger print taking, litter picking and how to help police identify suspects. There were two trips to Wimbledon Fire Station and to Merton Council’s CCTV control room.
The children were asked to design a neighbourhood watch, warden or police logo. Mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina, presented the winners of the four best designs with a £15 WHSmith voucher. All the children were presented with certificates of completion and given their very own Mayor’s crest pin badge.
Director of Environment & Regeneration Chris Lee said: “Neighbourhood Watch is about looking out for each other and improving the quality of life for yourself and others surrounding you. By working together, we all can help reduce all sorts of local crimes. We can also take action to improve the environment by getting something done about things like vandalism, graffiti and a lack of local amenities. It is a fantastic way to help build a safer community and by involving and by educating the younger generation we are ensuring a positive future for the borough.”
