Merton’s basketball team has successfully qualified for the finals weekend of the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games being held at Crystal Palace Nationals Sports Centre on Saturday 4 July.
Merton’s youngsters beat Hackney 26-21 in a highly competitive game to secure a place in the London Youth Games finals weekend, when Merton will face Harrow, Haringey or Westminster in the final four.
The achievement follows an unbeaten display at UEL Sportsdock earlier this year, which saw Merton’s team shoot to victory against four other London borough opponents. During the group stages, Merton was able to defeat teams from Southwark, Enfield and Richmond
Merton Council cabinet member for community and culture Councillor Nick Draper said: “This is always an exciting tournament. To see our young sportsmen and women compete and win against other boroughs is thrilling. It’s about sporting ability, but also it’s about the value of teamwork and what working together can achieve.”
